
My overall career objectives include an academic exploration of race relations and the social construction of race in the United States, eventually leading to a teaching career in a university. However, I also hope to gain as much practical work experience as possible working with people and organizations outside of academia.

8/96 - present Graduate Teaching Assistant - Native American Studies 71 and 72 With Professor Patricia Hilden, I am one of three teaching assistants for an introductory survey course series on Native American history. Responsibilities include leading discussion sections, as well as grading exams and papers.

7/94 - 8/96 Fulbright Grantee As a Fulbright, I taught 16 hours a week in a Korean middle school teaching English, while also practicing English with other teachers in the school during the week. The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship is a one-year internship designed to give overseas experience to recent college graduates, as well as exposure to the Korean culture. My stated purpose in choosing the Korea Fulbright program was study of the Korean language to a high level of competency. As competence in Korean will be useful for my long-term goals in the study of race relations, my time in Korea is as useful to me as my presence as a native speaker isto the Korean Ministry of Education. I extended the grant for one year.

1/93 - 5/93, 12/93 - 5/94 Teaching Assistant in Sociology 13 - "Racism and Democracy." During my first year, led sections, graded papers and exams, and assisted students in need of additional help. During my senior year, I acted as head undergraduate TA with Professor Martel, performing the same duties as previously, in addition to offering help in planning the course and selecting other TAs.
6/92 - 8/93 Odyssey/Mellon Research Fellow. For two summers, used Microsoft Word & EndnotePlus to download, format, and organize a large database of sources on interracial, interreligious, and interethnic marriages into a bibliography. Funded to expand the reading list of Sociology 13, it was used in planning a class on racial identity during the 1994 academic year. It has since become the the largest bibliography in existence covering the topic of multi/biraciality.
9/92 - 12/93 Teaching Assistant in Sociology 127 - "Race, Class, and Ethnicity in the Modern World." In this course on group and ethnic identity from an international perspective, I helped students and assisted the graduate teaching assistant in leading sections.

8/92 - 5/93 Coordinating Counselor. In a first-year unit (floor), supervised the activities of the other 4 counselors in the unit. Mediated counselor conflicts, and took administrative responsibility for the unit. Formal training included racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, and focused a great deal on conflict mediation skills.
8/91 - 5/92 Resident Counselor. General counselor for freshmen, offering peer support and advice. Trained in conflict mediation, racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, death and grieving, and religious sensitivity.

8/97 - Received a scholarship from the Korea Foundation in New York to study Korean at Yonsei University in Seoul during the summer.
1/97 - present I am presently leading of the Korean Studies Working Group, a study group composed mostly of graduate students who have research interests in Korea. WE meet to exchange information on sources, contacts, and ideas having to do with Korea.
10/93 - 5/94 Contributing Writer for The Independent, co-published by RISD and Brown.
9/91 - 5/94 Member of the Brown University Taekwondo Team for 3 years.
6/93 - 8/93 Mentored in the Gilbert-Stuart Brown Program, designed to keep at-risk elementary school kids with good academic records interested in math and science. Weekly field trips to science museums, public exhibits, and Brown research/computer facilities kept the kids fascinated and the mentors quite busy.
9/91 - 5/92 Meiklejohn Academic advisor for first-year students. Provided academic support and advice.
11/90 - 3/93 Co-founder/coordinator of BOMBS - Brown Organization of Multiracial and Biracial Students. The organization was created to offer support to students of mixed racial backgrounds, while acting as the political voice of that community on the Brown campus. After the first year as a co-founder, was re-elected for a second year as a co-coordinator.
